The House of Mercy Children’s Home was founded in 2000 by Rose Tambasi, in the slum village of Githurai, Kenya. It started with a few simple gestures--making small meals for local street kids and taking them to Sunday school. But eventually the kids proclaimed to be changed by her help and asked to move in…and the rest is history. The House of Mercy now provides a safe, healthy, and loving haven for 85 children who have either been orphaned, destitute, and/or affected by HIV/AIDS.
Under Rose’s care and guidance, the children are eager to get an education and develop into productive individuals with normal lives. But their daily challenges are enormous. Cramped into shared beds, moving from location to location, and short on food... their lives are far from “normal.”
To help solve these issues, we are trying to build a new permanent home on privately donated land. The new home will increase capacity for 200 children with bedrooms, bathrooms, a dining area, and classrooms. And with gardens and farm animals, the children will be able to grow their own sustainable food supply. All fundraising efforts are focused on raising enough money to finish construction and move the House of Mercy into its new location.
